NJFC SHOWCASE MATCH
Jon Kellar vs. Eric Darkthorne
Jon Kellar vs. Eric Darkthorne
Shiozaki: Up next we have a showcase match from New Japan Fighting Championship... Eric Darkthorne, a mainstay in our federation, will go one on one with a man who made one hell of an impact last year in only a small number of appearances, Jon Kellar.
Gozen: And, per an announcement from James Paterson on Twitter earlier this week, the winner of this match will go on to challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship at the festival of Puroresu next month.
The lights go out. A Gothic, Metallic blue light appears over the top of the entrance ramp. Smoke fills the arena.
(Introducing first... from the Kingdom of Hades... weighing in at 330lbs, the Deity of Devastation... Eric Darkthorne!)
Eric Darkthrone appears on top of the entrance ramp. He slowly walks to the ring with the light following him. He gets to the ring, steps over the ropes, and does the El Mesias pose in the middle of the ring in which Gothic blue fire shoots out from all four cornerposts.
Sato: Yeah, but that loss at Tag Team Tropolis has got to be playing on his mind... Konrad Raab ended that long undefeated streak...
Gozen: And now he's angry and he's going to want payback... I feel sorry for Kellar!
The lights in the arena darken and smoke slowly starts flowing onto the entrance stage. A single spotlight points towards the entranceway, as the crowd applaud.
Mai Kado: Soshite, kare no taisen aite wa 209 lbs no omo-sa, kuroidon, Igirisu no soto ni tatakatte. NINGEN DAINAMAITOJON KERĀ!!!!
(and his opponent fighting out of Croydon, United Kingdom, weighing in at 209lbs... The Human Dynamite.... Jon Kellar!)
Jon Kellar emerges from the smoke in the entrance way into the spotlight as “Blue God” fills the arena. He steps out onto the ramp, raises his head, and looks around. He is wearing his MMA gear, along with a TAPOUT brand t-shirt and beanie hat.
Behind him emerges his corner-man and coach, Sean O’Riley, towel over his shoulder and water-bottle in hand. Kellar’s gloves are strapped to Sean’s belt as the two of them make their way to the ring to the sound of respectful applause. Kellar has black eye paint on under his eyes, but none of the other “Human Dynamite” features.
Shiozaki: Kellar’s popularity is as strong as ever despite his time away...
Sato: Yes, but is he? This is first time inside the squared circle for months. His last wrestling appearance was in EWC’s King of the Cage tournament at the end of last year, where he reached the Quarter-Finals.
Gozen: And his last appearance for New Japan was at the crossover Rising Sun Revolution Pay-Per-View in that match against the now-retired John Pariah. That was the second of their informal “best of three” series.
Sato: ...which Kellar won, 2-1 as I recall, against John Pariah! No small feat!!!
Gozen: The past means nothing, it's all about the moment.
Shiozaki: I think you’re underestimating him Gozen. He hasn’t spent all those months sitting on the couch watching re-runs of House and Lost… he’s been training hard and furthering his MMA career. Kellar is a hard hitting strike, suplex and submission machine.
Kellar reaches the ring and walks all the way around it to the far corner, never taking his eyes off of Darkthorne as he does.
Shiozaki: Darkthorne may have lost his match with Raab at Tag Team Tropolis, but as Kellar himself said, a wounded beast can be the most dangerous of all.
Sato: And that's what Peterson intends to find out tonight. He's brought Jon Kellar back into the fold to test whether Darkthorne is the real deal.
Gozen: And now he's made it even more interesting, because as we said earlier, the winner of this match will challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship at the Festival of Puroresu next month.
Shiozaki: A showcase matches are usually enjoyable but rarely passionate. Now a chance to become champion is at stake all bets are off. These two are going to go all out to beat each other.
Kellar rolls under the bottom rope and into the ring, while Sean climbs the steps. Kellar walks to the centre of the ring and looks up once more as the spotlight focuses on him, the crowd cheering as he lets out a roar.
Shiozaki: He looks ready...
Kellar retreats to the corner to meet Sean, as he removes his hat and t-shirt. The referee approaches Darkthorne who snarls at him, but relents as the referee checks his attire for concealed weapons. While that search continues, Kellar puts in his gumshield as Sean helps him into his gloves. The referee approaches and checks Kellar as well, and Kellar takes one last drink of water from Sean before the Irishman drops back down to ringside.
The bell sounds, and the crowd cheer as the two men circle each other.
Shiozaki: Here we go! Who's going to the Festival of Puroresu?
Gozen: Darkthorne. Kellar's got the edge in speed and submission wrestling, but his offence is contingent on getting the 330lbs man down to the mat. I don't think Kellar can handle Darkthorne's power and size advantage.
Darkthorne shifts towards Kellar, who backs away, keeping his arms raised and maintaining a distance from the bigger man.
Sato: If Kellar could be undone by a size disadvantage his career would have ended years ago, he's never been the biggest competitor. He's smart, he has greater martial arts prowess and, as you say, he's quicker. It'll be close, but I think Kellar's experience will win through.
Kellar steps towards Darkthorne and goes for a kick to the leg, but Darkthorne backs away. The crowd applaud politely but impatiently.
Shiozaki: Both men looking to feel each other out here...
Darkthorne lunges towards Kellar, who ducks a clothesline and nails the bigger man with three stiff left jabs to the head, then two hard right forearms to the chest before backing away. Darkthorne glares at Kellar and laughs, dusting his chest off.
Sato: Woah! Darkthorne didn't even feel it!
Kellar shrugs and approaches Darkthorne. Kellar misses with a middle kick and finds himself trapped in a side headlock. Darkthorne wrenches at Kellar's head as Sean bangs his hands on the canvas. Kellar extends his arms out and is able to shift the two men just enough to reach the ropes. He grabs the rope and holds on as the referee approaches.
Darkthorne releases the hold, then delivers a clubbing blow across Kellar's back to take him down to a knee, then delivers another strike across the back of the head. Again, Kellar reaches out ad grabs the ropes, forcing the referee to come and separate the two men. Darkthorne laughs and delivers a series of disrespectful slaps to the back of Kellar's head as the veteran continues to hug the ropes.
Darkthorne walks away from Kellar for a while, but almost immediately returns and pins Kellar against the ropes with his knee. He grabs Kellar's head in his left hand and delivers a series of right hands to the side of Kellar's face. Again, Kellar continues to hold the ropes as the fists come reigning down and the referee is forced to pull Darkthorne away.
Darkthorne pushes the referee aside and grabs Kellar in a rear waist lock. He goes for a German Suplex, but Kellar throws back his elbow and catches the Hellgod just above the eye, opening up a small cut. Darkthorne staggers back, touching his eye and seeing the blood on his hand. Kellar doesn't need any invitation as he slams a series of hard jabs into the cut to make it wider, then finishes with a hard right straight. Darkthorne hits the mat hard and rolls into the corner as Kellar tries to shake off the effects of the beating.
Shiozaki: Darkthorne got a little too cocky there and gave Kellar an opening, albeit a desperate one.
Both men are back to their feet. Kellar smirks at Darkthrone from across the ring and drops down onto one knee, then raises both his hands, urging him to bring it. Darkthorne charges across the ring and Kellar takes the hit against the turnbuckle, collapsing onto the mat.
Kellar pulls himself back to his feet in the same corner, and does the same again, smiling as he does. Again, Darkthorne charges and crushes the Human Dynamite in the corner. Kellar falls onto the mat, and starts crawling out of the corner towards one of the others. He pulls himself up once again, and signals to Darkthorne to do it again.
Sato: Does Kellar have a death wish??!?
Darkthorne charges across the ring but this time, as he does, Kellar drops completely and catches the bigger man with a drop toe hold. Darkthorne goes head first into the turnbuckle as Kellar, winded from the two impacts but now in control, grabs him by the hair and delivers a series of stiff hammer punches to the Hellgod's swollen eye until the referee intervenes and tells him to let go.
After some stern words from the referee, Kellar approaches Darkthorne and grabs him in a Muy Thai clinch in the corner. He pulls Darkthorne's head down and Kellar lifts his knees, driving them into the bigger man's head. Darkthorne tries to get away but Kellar won't give up the clinch, keeping the big man in the corner and continuing to strike him in the head with knees. The referee intervenes and tells Kellar to stop, but he refuses, prompting the referee to start the five count.
Before the referee can reach 5, Darkthorne manages to free his arms and pushes Kellar hard out of the corner. Darkthorne charges at Kellar, lifts him up and drives him into the mat with a combination of a spear and spinebuster.
Darkthorne covers Kellar, hooking the leg.

Kellar rolls his shoulder off the mat to break the count at two, and Darkthorne goes up to his knees. The crowd lets out a very audible "aaaagh!" sound as they get a close up look of Darkthorne's face. The cut above his eye is now a bloody mess, with blood pouring down his face, and the area eye itself is starting to swell up and turn purple.
Sato: I don't care how big you are, you can't hit if you can't see properly! If Darkthorne can't put Kellar away quickly then this match is going to very quickly turn against him.
Shiozaki: Was that Kellar's strategy all along, or did he just get lucky with that earlier elbow?
Darkthorne has the momentum now, and pushes the referee away as the latter comes to check on his eye. He wipes some of the blood off of his face and pulls Kellar to his feet. He traps Kellar in a front face lock and tightens the hold as Kellar struggles in the bigger man's grip.
Gozen: I don't think that eye is going to hold Darkthorne back somehow...
Kellar extends one of his legs back to try and get to the ropes but Darkthorne is having none of it, and lifts Kellar into a vertical Suplex, dropping him hard on his back. Darkthorne goes for another pin.

Kellar gets his shoulder up and rolls onto his stomach to prevent a repeat pin attempt. Darkthorne just stares down at him and laughs.
Shiozaki: Darkthorne well in control now, and looking to pick apart his opponent.
Kellar stays on his stomach as Darkthorne towers over him and wraps his arms around his waist. With a freakish burst of strength Darkthorne deadlifts Kellar and slams him with a hard German Suplex that sends Kellar flying across the ring to a roar from the crowd.
[/div]Gozen: Kellar's gonna fly!!!!
Kellar lands hard on his neck and shoulders, but rolls under the rope to the outside of the ring. Darkthorne stands and struts across the ring, his arms outstretched, soaking up the reaction of the crowd.
[/div]Gozen: Not much chance of that here, he's giving up over 100lbs and even if he wasn't, he's being tossed around like a rag doll.
Shiozaki: Kellar's the veteran here and he's left his mark, but is the raw power of Eric Darkthorne just too much for him to overcome?
Kellar writhes on the outside as Darkthorne rolls to the outside and approaches. As he gets close to Kellar, the latter throws a right at Darkthorne which sends him staggering back. Kellar goes to follow up but takes a knee to the gut for his trouble, and Darkthorne slams the Human Dynamite's head against the ring apron, then grabs him and throws him hard against the crowd barrier.
The referee is commanding both men to get back in the ring as Darkthorne approaches the nearby announce table and picks up a chair.
Darkthorne snaps the chair shut and approaches Kellar, who is over on all fours. Darkthorne approaches slowly, like a shark stalking it’s prey, and lifts the chair above his head.
Darkthorne sends the chair crashing down across Kellar’s back, much to the irritation of the referee. Kellar falls flat on the ground as Darkthorne smirks to himself and the crowd boo for the use of the weapon. The referee, irritated by Darkthorne, rolls out of the ring and tells Darkthorne to get back in the ring.
Shiozaki: Yes. A reminder to our viewers that referees in NJFC are encouraged to use their discretion when disqualifying a wrestler… but excess use of weapons will not be tolerated.
Darkthorne smirks and drops the chair, rolling back into the ring. The referee follows, only for Darkthorne to roll out of the ring again immediately. He picks up the discarded chair and sets it up outside the ring, then grabs Kellar and puts his head across the seat. The referee has had enough, and starts the 20 count.
Darkthorne stalks Kellar from the apron, holding onto the ropes
As the referee reaches 10, Darkthorne jumps from the apron, leading with his knee but Kellar moves out of the way and Darkthorne eats nothing but steel. The crowd let out a very audible “aaargh!” as Darkthorne rolls away, clutching his knee. The referee immediately stops the count and rolls out of the ring to check on Darkthorne as Kellar props himself up with the ring apron.
Kellar rolls back into the ring to get away from Darkthorne, but finds himself alone in there. He rolls away from where the referee is checking on Darkthorne towards Sean, who gives him some water.
Kellar pours the cold water over his neck and shoulders as Sean gives him some advice.
Kellar nods at Sean and makes his way around to Darkthorne, who is getting up to his feet but has clearly damaged his knee. Kellar shows no mercy and runs, planting a stiff sole-first kick into the back of Darkthorne’s leg. The bigger man yells and rolls forward, and Kellar grabs him by the hair and rolls him into the ring. The referee follows suit.
Gozen: It won’t last… I still say the smart money’s on Darkthorne.
Kellar puts his foot on Darkthorne's injured knee and presses down hard. Darkthorne roars on the mat as Kellar stares down at him.
Kellar lifts his foot and covers Darkthorne.

Darkthorne kicks out.
Shiozaki: I think he offered Darkthorne a way out. Clearly he doesn't know Eric Darkthorne very well if he thinks Darkthorne would even consider taking it!
Kellar shakes his head and stands. Darkthorne pulls himself up with the ropes and staggers towards Kellar, who ducks a clothesline and immediately takes Darkthorne down with a chop block to the back of the injured knee. Kellar grabs the leg and delivers a series of kicks to the hamstring, then rolls Darkthorne onto his front and drives his knee into the canvas.
Darkthorne struggles up and Kellar grabs him and backs him into the corner. He grabs Darkthorne’s leg and delivers a dragon screw leg snap, sending the bigger man to the canvas in the corner. Kellar drops out of the ring, grabs Darkthorne's leg and drags him closer to the ring post. As the referee protests, Kellar slams Darkthorne's knee into the ring post, then grabs the leg and does it again, and again.
The referee starts the 20 count to persuade Kellar to get back in the ring, and Kellar does so immediately. More stern words from the referee follow as Kellar approaches Darkthorne. Kellar just stands and watches his opponent for a while, then as Darkthorne goes to stand Kellar delivers another kick to the back of Darkthorne's knee, before grabbing the leg and, with some gesturing to the crowd, dropping into a kneebar.
Sato: A kneebar, I haven't seen that in a while!
Gozen: Kellar may be looking for a submission victory here, but Darkthorne himself is no slouch in submission wrestling. He will know how to get out of this hold.
Sato: With respect, there's a difference between being trained in submission wrestling and being a submission specialist. Darkthorne has avoided looking for a submission here because he knows he can't go toe-to-toe with Kellar in that department. He's used his power, and it was working, but his arrogance cost him.
Gozen: It wasn't arrogance, it was a move that backfired. We've all seen it.
Kellar wrenches back on the knee and Darkthorne howls in the hold as the referee checks on himself, but he refuses to tap. Kellar grapevines the leg and rolls his body to tighten the hold, even taking the opportunity to deliver a few more hammer fists to the knee.
Gozen: Darkthorne isn't going to surrender here... it's just not in his programming!
Fighting through the pain, Darkthorne drags himself and Kellar across the ring, reaching out for the bottom rope, but finding it just beyond his grasp. He raises his hand.
Darkthorne finds one last burst of energy and reaches out, grabbing the rope. The referee forces Kellar to break the hold as the latter rolls away, clearly frustrated he didn't get the submission. Sean too bangs on the canvas in frustration.
Shiozaki: Well he certainly didn't that time.
Kellar goes to follow up but finds himself on the receiving end of a gut punch. He staggers back as Darkthorne struggles up to his feet. He hobbles towards Kellar and goes to whip him across the ring, but Kellar turns into the whip and delivers a stiff kick to the back of Darkthorne's knee. Darkthorne drops to a knee and Kellar follows up by grabbing his hair and driving his knees directly into Darkthorne's head. The referee tells Kellar to let go of Darkthorne's hair, and Kellar complies, but switches to kicks instead.
Kellar delivers a stiff middle kick to the side of Darkthorne's head
Darkthorne, clearly groggy, doesn't go down, much to Kellar's surprise.
Another kick, harder than the last one.
Darkthorne still doesn't go down. Kellar glares at him.
Another kick, so hard that the impact echoes around the entire arena.
Darkthorne still doesn't go down. Kellar just stares at him, his eyes white and wide.
Shiozaki: The more pressing question is how is Eric Darkthorne still conscious???!!! That kick should have dropped a bear!
Kellar, clearly frustrated by Darkthorne's refusal to fall down and stay there, rebounds off the ropes for the Kellar Klash, but Darkthorne springs up (insofar as he can with no knee and a ringing head) and takes Kellar to the mat with an MMA style Double-leg takedown. Darkthorne takes full mount and begins pummelling the hell out of Kellar's head.
Kellar covers up and tries to roll his hips, but Darkthorne shifts his weight and keeps control, continuing to pummel Kellar.
Kellar keeps shifting and eventually manages to get a full guard, his legs wrapped around Darkthorne's waist. With a shift of his body he manages to roll Darkthorne over and goes for another kneebar, but Darkthorne rakes him across the eye, much to the referee's irritation.
Gozen: It's one rake to the eye... Kellar's done far worse to Darkthorne's eye.. look at it.
Between the knees in the corner earlier and the knees just now, Darkthorne's eye is almost completely swollen shut, but the flow of blood seems to have abated. Kellar staggers back onto the ropes and Darkthorne approaches, grabs him around the waist and plants him hard on the mat with a German Suplex.
As if on cue, Darkthorne hobbles over to Kellar and, deadlifting him once again, throws him across the ring with another German Suplex. Kellar lands in a heap on the other side of the ring.
With Kellar folded up like an accordion on the other side of the ring, Darkthorne approaches and goes for another rear waistlock. Kellar throws back an elbow, hoping to escape the same way he did before, but Darkthorne is ready this time and catches his arm. He locks in a full nelson hold and presses hard against Kellar's neck. Kellar writhes in the hold, but Darkthorne doesn't let go.
Darkthorne forces Kellar down to his knees, then traps Kellar's arm and looks for a Cobra Clutch.
Kellar, with what little energy he has left throws back his elbow into Darkthorne's injured eye. It throws Darkthorne off enough to stop the Cobra Clutch, but Darkthorne instead re-establishes the Full Nelson lock and slams Kellar with a Dragon Suplex, bridging as he does.

Thrkickout!!!
Throwing all of his left over energy into his legs, Kellar pushes out of the hold and rolls onto his feet. He rebounds (read: falls into) the ropes and throws an erratic haymaker that completely misses Darkthorne, who grabs Kellar in a pumphandle and lifts him into the air.
Darkthorne drives Kellar head-first into the mat with the Hell Hammer.
Darkthorne covers Kellar as Sean screams from ringside.

Thrkickout!!!!
Suddenly, pulling one of his trademark "Back from the dead" manuevers Kellar kicks out, and without breaking stride rolls over into a rear-mount and blasts Darkthorne repeatedly with shots to his injured eye, opening up the cut again. He manages to get in four or five strikes before the damage he has taken takes its toll and Kellar collapses backwards onto the mat, lying flat for a while before staggering to the ropes. Darkthorne stands as the referee tries, again, to check on his eye. Darkthorne pushes the referee aside.
Gozen: Was it? He escaped the pin and got a few shots in, but Kellar's on the mat and Darkthorne looks furious!!!
Darkthorne, now really REALLY angry about the state of his eye, waits for Kellar to struggle up to his feet, then returns him to the mat via a hard spear. Kellar writhes on the mat, clutching at his ribs as Darkthorne pulls him up, locks both his arms in a chicken wing, and then drops Kellar hard on his head with a Tiger Suplex.
Sato: Is anyone keeping count?!
Darkthorne covers Kellar.

Thrkickout!!!!
Kellar throws his shoulder off the mat to a roar from the crowd.
Shiozaki: Kellar is battered, Kellar is bruised, but Kellar is beaten. The veteran refusing to stay down despite being thrown around like a rag doll here!
Darkthorne shouts at the referee, but the referee confirms it was only a two count. Kellar crawls on his belly, away from Darkthorne as Sean bangs on the canvas, telling him to get up. Darkthorne walks over the top of Kellar and stands him front of him, and Kellar climbs up his legs, staring up at him. Darkthorne shakes his head.
Darkthorne delivers a kick to the gut and goes to finish Kellar off with Judgement of the Gods, but as he hooks Kellar's arm, Kellar pushes his other arm forward and grabs Darkthorne's knee, digging his fingers into the bigger man's hamstring. The claw grip is small, but effective as Darkthorne drops down to a knee and Kellar throws his full body weight at him to send the bigger man to the mat with Kellar on top of him.
Kellar, clearly on his last legs from the suplexes, turns on the ground and locks the kneebar back onto Darkthorne, wrenching away at the knee joint. Darkthorne tries to fight out as Kellar twists and turns and tries to grapevine the leg and trap Darkthorne on his stomach. He can't, and soon finds himself on the receiving end of several heavy boots to the head which force him to break the kneebar.
Kellar rolls away and painfully pulls himself up in the corner. As Darkthorne writhes on the mat clutching his knee, Kellar then slaps his own knee and makes a cut-throat gesture. The crowd roar; they know what's coming.
Darkthorne tries to stand but after all the damage his knee finally gives out on him and he drops onto it. Kellar charges across the ring and smashes Darkthorne hard in the head with his knee to a HUGE roar from the crowd. Darkthorne hits the mat hard and lies there, completely still.
INSTANT REPLAY
Kellar wastes no time falling backwards onto his opponent and hooking the leg.

Shiozaki: JON KELLAR WINS!!!!
WINNER: JON KELLAR (18:03)
Mai Kado: Anata no shōsha, ningen dainamaito jon kerā!
(Your winner, the Human Dynamite, Jon Kellar!!!)
"Blue God" fills the arena again as the entire arena, to a man, stands and applauds both competitors. Kellar rolls out of the cover as Sean slides into the ring, ice-pack in hand. He pushes the pack against Kellar's neck and upper back, and taps him on the shoulder, visibly impressed with his client's work tonight. Kellar pulls out his gumshield and slumps forward, exhausted.
Darkthorne, shaking the cobwebs out of his head, his eye almost swollen shut, struggles up to his feet, while Sean helps Kellar up. The referee approaches Kellar and raises his arm in victory as a frustrated Darkthorne leaves the ring, taking a moment to glare back at Kellar as if to say "Next Time..."
Sato: But what now? Two defeats on the bounce after such an impressive run has got to be eating away at Darkthorne. Where does he go from here?
Gozen: We haven't seen the last of him, he'll be back and he'll be out for revenge. When that happens, I wouldn't want to be the man opposite him.
Sean hands Kellar a water bottle and helps him out of the ring as we cut to...
