Home. It’s a familiar sight for most people, but for Bryan it’s a backdrop. Those who watch 4CW would know, it has become a go-to place for Bryan recently. His promos, videos cut for his matches have all used it as a backdrop.
This match is no different.
Bryan stands there, staring into the camera. A dark suit worn for the work ahead, Bryan looks into the camera with such intensity. The only kind we’ve seen from him as of late. On his shoulder is the 4CW Pride championship.
He looks to his other shoulder, seems to be missing something. Bryan looks back into the camera, smirking.
“I can feel it, James. Can you?
There’s a tension in the air, James. Blood in the water. A championship is up for grabs and the sharks have come out to play.
I knew I was going to be coming back, knew I would be headed back to Japan. I joke, make fun about the time I spent there last year. Despite it all it was still productive, it served a purpose. I did well, Sativa and I did very well. Eventually I would have to make my return, after I had taken care of some things stateside.
I figured this tournament would be as good as any other time, a chance to capture another title. Another accomplishment to tack up next to my name. Surely the talent pool would reflect my ambition, and I have to say I’m a little disappointed.”
Bryan shakes his head slightly, as he pauses. He stops for a moment, thinking it all over. For a second he glances down, but soon enough he’s talking again.
“Sure, James Edwards is a big enough name in some places. I guess I was just seeking ...more. You’d understand, I’m sure. James, I’ve seen you grown in this business. You’ve come a long way from being in Fight One, jumping over to Boardwalk Wrestling. Two places that let you down, so you had to expand out a little. Look at you now, you’re almost everywhere!
FGA, Seattle Pro, Lions Road, UKWF, DARC…”
Bryan lists them all, a finger raised for each one. He audibly gags at the mention of the last promotion, his face settling on a shit eating grin.
“You’ve certainly tried to make a brand for yourself, the Burning Heart is all over the place folks. He’s arrived in New Japan, and he’s looking to take that Global championship.
James, you might fight all over the globe but that doesn’t necessarily give you the credentials here. These places work on a global level, but that doesn’t make you the de-facto global champion. It takes more than making a bunch of towns, and it takes more than trying to etch another notch into your belt.
Sure, you’ve faced some good names, some real class talent in this business. You’ve got your face out there, people know who you are. That doesn’t make you ready, that hasn’t prepared you for what is about to come. You’re about to step into the ring with a real globalist, somebody who truly defines what this championship should mean. Somebody who can wear it proudly, and represent it with the pride it deserves. I should know...”
Bryan says, nudging his Pride championship towards the camera.
“I’ve lived it, been down and out since getting back into this business. I’ve certainly had my fair share of things to be upset about, but I’ve proved that I don’t stay down. Whatever comes my way, whatever happens, I keep going. I get better, and I prove that every time I step into that ring. It’s why I can go with guys like Jair Hopkins, Jason Cashe, and Jett Wilder. It’s why I get opportunities like facing Felicity Banks. It’s why I’m a two time 4CW Pride champion.
You’ve set yourself out all over, and that’s really great. It isn’t going to help, though. No matter what you do, you’ll always be remembered as a Twitter bit. You’ll be remembered not fondly, but oddly.
You’ve spread yourself too thin, too quickly. You’re just setting yourself up for failure, and it’s going to come at the highest level. Keep pushing, keep racing to the top and you’ll soon find out. I may not be the catalyst here, but I sure as hell will be a big warning sign for you. I will be the resolution that you should have seen coming.
I’m taking this thing, match by match. I’m digging in, and facing the battles that are coming my way. Getting somebody like you in the first round is perfect. I wouldn’t want to take this title any other way. I wouldn’t want anything but a challenge. That way nobody can doubt, nobody can take it away when I have my hand raised at the end of this all.
This is my message, I hope it reaches you clearly.”
Bryan pulls a paper heart out of his pocket, and a lighter out of his other. He quickly sparks a flame, holding the paper heart towards it.
“From me, to you, James.
Don’t get your heart set on this. It’s just going to end up burning away.”
With that Bryan is finished, nothing else left to say. The paper heart he holds in his hands burns away, falling towards the ground. The camera lingers on the burnt heart, only Bryan’s footsteps can be heard as we fade to black.
