Nerd Paladin, Level Up!
File 001: The Radiant Soul | ラディアント魂
The beginning of the Rose Week is a beautiful sight within the Nagai Botanical Gardens. The cherry blossoms may be gone, but the blooming of the roses takes her breath away. With each step she takes, Jessica Nitoh looks around in awe of the exhibition. Her eyes find the pink chimes Japanese snowbell trees and she finally stops.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
She reaches out with a hand, even though the trees are too tall, and she smiles.
“In America, I’ve visited several Japanese gardens, but they don’t compare to their origins in Japan. Nagai’s gardens are breathtaking. There’s a sense of warmth, comfort, and peace here.”
She lowers her hand and takes a deep breath of the pure, fresh air. She lets it out slowly and looks towards the camera, a gentle breeze flowing through and dancing with her hair. The light of the rising sun glimmers upon her, this morning beauty a sight to behold.
“I’m a very observant person. So many days have passed since the announcement of the NJFC Global Championship Tournament. The press conference has passed and the first night of Global Takeover is almost among us, and yet… No one has talked about me. Not a single word.”
A shake of her head, she can’t help but chuckle softly.
“Now I understand that there are a lot of participants in the tournament. We’re not going to be able to mention everyone, but in my perspective, this has happened before. The super gamer-turned-professional wrestler is always taken lightly. She’s not a threat. She’s still young and naive. She’s won a championship since the last time, but that doesn’t matter. It’s almost always the same. So far in my wrestling career, most of my opponents have underestimated me. They make the same mistake over and over again… I almost feel sorry for them.”
Her carefree demeanor slowly turns into a more serious one.
“I don’t feel sorry for them because it’s the same shit on a different day. Some people never learn. Every time someone underestimates me, I prove them wrong. One way or another, I have always risen up. I’ve surpassed the expectations set for me. I have grown and developed so much as a wrestler since I first began my training with Jaime Alejandro. He may no longer be my primary mentor, but he still watches over me. He knows I have improved by leaps and bounds. I have proven myself time and time again.”
Slowly she clenches her fists and her eyes glower into the camera. She can see them, the non-believers, their doubt, their arrogance, and their ignorance.
“The NJFC Global Championship… I want it. I need it. In this tournament, there’s no one who strives to be a champion more than me. Some of you don’t even care about becoming the first Global Champion of 2017. It’s an old question of this industry, but if you’re not fighting to become a champion, then what are you doing here? Since day one, I’ve always wanted to be one of the best wrestlers in this sport. When I finally won the IPW Heavyweight Champion, I knew I was more than capable of that. It’s true that I haven’t been a champion since then, but that hasn’t deterred me from trying again. I want to be the best wrestler that I can be, and when I reach that pinnacle, I want to break the glass ceiling and go beyond. I’ve grown tired of the majority of my opponents making the same damn mistake. When my husband and I decided that we would no longer respect those who don’t deserve it, we meant it. If you want our respect, you have to earn it!”
Her body trembles lightly and her eyes shimmer softly. She doesn’t falter in her stance otherwise. Her soft blue eyes continue to gaze into the camera as she speaks up.
“Benny Stevens is a fool. My first opponent in the tournament and he hasn’t said a word about me. If his only concern in the tournament is the money, then he doesn’t belong. I’ll knock him out of the tournament and continue on. Whether I face Owen Gonsalves or Hiroyoshi Suzuki after him, I’ll be sure to bring my A-game as I always do. I do have some respect for both of them, but unfortunately, they’re just like all the others -- they have no words for me. I can only hope they’re wise enough to not underestimate me and what I’m capable of. Owen, especially, should be more considerate of who I am. After all, we’ve both trained under Ricky Valero. I understand there’s some tension between you two, Owen. I’m well aware that Ricky’s been undergoing some changes, but that doesn’t stop me from being his protégé. Whatever your history is, I’m not going to let it change anything. If you get in my way, I won’t hesitate to take you down. That goes for anyone and everyone who opposes me.
Williams. Edwards. Tillman. Anderson. Shinobu. Reed. Hearst. King. Otaki. Hayden. Toshikazu.
My radiant soul is burning with passion. I will become a champion again and I won’t allow anyone to stop me. My story, my journey, my career -- it has barely just begun. I’m only going to better myself from here on out and I will not be shaken!”
A single flower from the tree breaks free and slowly flutters towards the ground. Looking up, Jessica reaches out with her palm facing up and the pink chime lands perfectly in the center. Finally her smile returns.
“Ladies and gentlemen, roll initiative and game on.”
