10 QUESTIONS WITH...
CHANDLER SCOTT
1. How are you and how are you finding Japan?
I'm doing well. I'm loving Japan. This is my first time really being here outside of a few one-offs from a few years back.
2. What's the difference between Frontier Grappling Arts and NJFC?
It's a bit of a different vibe. Less talk, more action. I kind of like it, actually. Back in FGA, you have these various sections throughout the show where so is so is being interviewed in the ring or so and so is talking backstage. Here, you have your time to talk, too. But that's in the press conferences. When it comes to the show, it's all about the wrestling. It's a welcome change.
3. What was it that attracted you to NJFC?
I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. There's a bunch of quality companies that FGA is affiliated with. But I felt like NJFC gave me the opportunity to dive head-first into waters that I was unfamiliar with.
4. A lot of people are putting you down as the favorite for the series at the moment, thoughts?
That's very nice of them and I appreciate that. But the matches aren't won on paper. They're won in the ring. There's still a long ways to go.
5. Is there anyone in particular you're looking forward to facing?
Chris Madison, if he and I are both lucky enough to make the finals. We were both in FGA during his first stint there way back in 2014, but we never crossed paths. Since he returned last year, our paths still haven't crossed. So he's someone that I would definitely be looking forward to going up against. Bryan Williams would have been another. But it looks like that won't be happening anytime soon. It sucks to see a great athlete like him be put on the sidelines due to injury.
6. What is it that makes Chandler Scott different to everybody else?
Hmm. I would say my drive. There are people in this tournament that are more technically sound than me. They fly higher. They hit harder. You name it. But I feel like I want this more than a lot of the competition does. They may say they do. They may tick off all the boxes. They make say what you want to hear. But I'm the guy that's willing to go out there and get it, night in and night out, regardless of who I'm up against.
7. Congratulations on your hall of fame induction in Frontier, did you see it coming?
Thank you. Once they formally announced a Hall of Fame, I figured that it would happen one day. Normally in other sports, you aren't elected to a Hall of Fame until after you've retired from the sport. But I don't plan on uttering the R world anytime soon. So yes, it was a bit of a surprise.
8. Do you hope to reach a status perhaps similar, or is this something that you see as temporary?
Is what temporary? My time in NJFC? I've signed a contract to compete here regularly and I fully intend on living up to my end of the bargain. And I fully intend on carving out a legacy here, just like I did in the States and in the UK.
9. Is there anyone who is capturing your eye at the moment here in Japan?
Shimada is someone that I definitely have my eyes on, especially after what he and the Dogs of War did during the Madison-Cashe match.
10. Making it to the finals, what would that mean to you?
It would mean quite a lot. But winning it would mean so much more. Getting to the Finals would mean that I was able to successfully adapt to this level of competition. It means that I was able to defend myself against opponents that I'm admittedly not the most familiar with. But winning it? That's the end goal.
